Smells like teen spirit.
GGJ NEXT - the Global Game Jam event dedicated to young creators - hired our team to create animated visuals and invite all these young participants to come join them in the 2021 edition of the event.
The theme to inspire the game creators this year was representation, so we rolled up our sleeves and dove into this challenge.

Keep it simple.
Working with shorter team, budget and timeline is always a puzzle we often deal with.
And to solve this conundrum we usually start by keeping the art/animation direction super simple but staying true to what we feel fits nicely to the brief and our particular taste.
This project was based almost entirely on boarded styleframes, that we exported directly into after effects for animation. The letterings were all created by hand and organically as we were moving forward. All we wanted was to represent in a fun way a few things that usually happen during a GGJ Next event in a playful way.

Razor sharp!
But how far in the simple scale could we go without loosing likeness, appeal and still sending the message we want across? To test this limit we knew that lasso tool and simple shapes would be our best friends on the way of achieving that.
Cut out paper have a big role at this young stage of life: dioramas, papercrafts, origamis, school projects, mother's day postcards, you name it. And for us, the method of sculpting shapes like paper cuts is like playing with legos but with inifinite pieces, our only limitation was the color palette and following a certain direction style.

For color pallette and combinations we played mostly with the RYB subtractive color model, adding the purple as it is GGJ main pigment.
We also experimented interacting them using transparency, specially for letterings to create other colors and emphasize depth when shapes would go on top of each other.
Black was added later on just as an accent color, and to create hard cast shadows - just because we kinda like cast shadows very very much, thanks.

The overall look ended up getting super diverse and allowing several types of combinations that, considering the theme was representation, was just what we needed.
Representation is a tricky word with multiple meanings but some that were in the back of our minds were related to diversity or seeing yourself represented in something like an artwork or someone.
People features and culture >> turning into small pieces of information >> turning into something else that represent them (like infinite shapes and combination of colored paper cuts)
